Using Handheld RFID Readers To Inventory Assets

Implementing a handheld RFID reader into your asset tracking system allows you to easily automate the inventory process.  This type of system involves less consulting, installation, engineering and tuning than implementations that utilize fixed RFID readers.

There are four main steps involved in the implementation of a handheld RFID reader.  They are as following:

  1. Find an RFID asset tracking software for your inventory needs.  Implementing software like RFTrack is more cost-effective than having an internal developer produce software in house.
  2. Select your handheld RFID reader.  This process should be completed while you evaluate which tags you want to order because different handhelds will provide different read ranges.  Ensure that the handheld you select is supported by your RFID asset management software.
  3. Evaluate tags.  There are no standard RFID tags, so you will need to evaluate many different tags in your environment with different handheld RFID readers.  Different RFID tags are designed for different types of assets, so the vendor you are working with should assist you with testing multiple tag vendors so that you test the best tags available for your needs.
  4. Tag your assets.  Software like RFTrack can help you to automate this process.  Ensure that you are keeping track of which RFID tags are placed on which assets.
